If Jesus came to make us free, why do so many churches make so many rules for people to follow? What does it mean for people to be "free indeed"?

Matthew's account of Jesus life begins with an empty manger. Before he introduces the Messiah, he tells us Jesus origin story. Within this big picture he mentions four women: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba. These women set the stage for Jesus by reminding us that God responds to faith with mercy.

The book of Proverbs doesn't mention the Exodus, or other major events in Israel's history, yet God is all through it. Proverbs reminds us to recognize and seek God in the small stuff. And that's something for which we can give thanks.

Everyone makes foolish decisions at various points in our lives. Sometimes the book of Proverbs sounds like it writes us off as a lost cause because of those decisions. However, Proverbs is a redemptive book that encourages everyone to pursue wisdom. Small wise decisions have long-term consequences.

The book of Proverbs contains many warnings about the way we speak. The wise speak differently from the fool. Words of wisdom originate in the heart, not the mind. Do your words more often build others up, or tear others down?

Sometimes it seems that there's a master list of behaviours all Christians should keep: that all Christians should be equally nice people. Yet the Bible contains story after story of people who looked nothing like each other while each possessed the Spirit of God. We need to give ourselves, and others, grace and space to grow.

When life gets out of control many people cry out, "Where's God?". Many people in in the Bible have done the same thing. Sometimes God answers, sometimes he doesn't. Can God make any sense of our chaos?

God can be hard to find. Sometimes life's circumstances obscure Him. Sometimes God's people don't reveal Him. But always, if we know where to look, we can find Him. While loneliness can be debilitating, God's intention is for his children to experience relationship with Him and with His people. The church exists, in part, as a solution to one of today's great social problems, loneliness.
